It’s that time again. You feel the urge to get in your car and head out to the casino. Or you turn on your computer and go straight to your bookmarked Internet gambling site. You may even have made it your home page. You can’t keep a $10 or $20 bill in your wallet without feeling compelled to place a bet, buy a Lotto ticket, or drop it in the insatiable slots. Even if you’ve gone through counseling for compulsive gambling addiction and are attending 12-step groups such as Gamblers Anonymous, you still feel the urge. What can you do? Gamblers Anonymous: Admitting to a Gambling Problem is the First Step

Traditional assumptions surrounding Gamblers Anonymous (GA) involved a group that was heavily dominated by men. In fact, in the past a gambling addiction was considered something that developed as a problem only in men. GA meetings were heavily dominated by the male persona, including “war stories” or graphic and disturbing accounts of a life in active addiction that were effective in alienating women.

Gambling Addiction Led to Bank Robberies and Arrest

Consumed by his gambling addiction, Michael Anders ended up robbing banks to support his habit. "When an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol, they go get alcohol to satisfy that desire," said Anders, who was arrested after his second bank robbery in 1992. "A gambler needs money to feed his addiction. I went to where the money was."

How to Deal With Urges to Gamble

When you’re in recovery, you may think at first that you’re out of the woods with your gambling addiction. Despite what you learned during treatment and in your 12-step meetings at Gamblers Anonymous about how cravings to gamble will come back, you think you’ve got it all under control. Then, the inevitable occurs. When you least expect it, those old, powerful urges to go out and gamble take over your thoughts and drive you crazy. What can you do? How can you possibly deal with these impossible urges to gamble? Here are some tips.
